Eco-Friendly Cargo Ship Launches

Yesterday the first cargo ship to use a massive kite/sail for part of its power left port from Germany on a voyage to Venezuela. SkySails, the company behind the kites, says that using the 160-square-meter kite can reduce up to 35% of the fuel consumption of the boats, depending on wind conditions. This first kite ship is being used to prove that the technology works to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The kite is controlled by a computer and can pull the ship along regardless of wind direction and, unlike the old-style mast and sails, doesn't get in the way of loading and unloading cargo.

SkySails does admit that their product is not ready for widespread commercial use, but will slowly be introduced into the markets.
